Industrial Barcode Scanner PDA

Basic things to know before selecting the right barcode scanner

Now, the barcode input scanner device is easier to use than before. Those days are gone when you need to deal with decoder boxes and multiple cables mysteries. Even with a big industrial barcode scanner PDA, you need to just plug the scanner single cable and connect with a PC, here you are done. Scanning the materials and identifications have become easier now, there are more varieties and options of scanners are available now to select from. Picking the right barcode scanner among all can be a challenge without knowing the different types and options of scanners.

Types of a barcode scanner:

The most important concern while choosing the barcode scanner is the scan engine type you need. This is dependent on the barcode types, what you want to scan, and how unit aggressive you need. There are three common types of scan engines:

Laser:

One of the most famous scanner types is a laser that uses a red diode laser to input the black and white spaces reflectance in a barcode. It can only read standard linear barcodes. Moreover, this is the most cost-effective scanner option. From a few inches to a foot away, standard laser scanners can read them as it depends on the barcode sizes. Also, there is a wide range of laser scanners while using large reflective labels, it can scan up to 35ft away.

Linear imager:

Linear imager scanners are just like lasers, as it can also read 1D barcodes. As the name suggested the linear imagers take pictures of barcodes. Then they analyze the barcode image to extract the code information. They have become a good replacement for traditional laser scanner as they can read ranges and their costs have become similar. For more aggressive scanner applications, a linear imager scanner is a great fit for a similar cost.

2D area imagers:

Full 2D area imagers scanner capture an image of codes to analyze. This type of scanner is more latest as they can read any type of barcode to scan. The 2D barcode scanner is supported by a 2D imager. Another benefit of these images is the barcode orientation is not necessary while reading means decoding. It takes a more thorough image and in a more intelligent way so the code is read from any direction. This is more efficient as it reads faster with less scan aiming.

Form factors:

After knowing the different types of scanner, the next thing to consider is the form factor of the scanner. From retail and different grocery stores, most of the people are familiar with in-counter scanners and gun-style. For scanners, there are five key form factors.

Handheld:

The most common form of scanners is handheld which is easy to operate. Simply aim the barcode and pull the trigger. They offer stand models for hands-free operations. A handheld scanner is available in cordless form also to avoid cable clutter and increase mobility.

Presentation scanner:

Presentation form scanners are designed to sit on counter-top and there is no need to pick-up or held in hand. These are simply hand-free scanners and do not require any triggering to read. They have wide reading areas for reducing the aiming need.

In-counter:

The in-counter scanner is similar to presentation form scanners. They are made to embed into countertop only. These are common at self-check-out lines and grocery stores. These are easy to operate for frequent use.

Mobile computer:

This type of scanner provides full freedom to use for PC and as a single device scanner. This mobile computer scanner can move freely around, there is no need to connect with a PC all the time. These are ideal for true mobility applications like asset tracking and inventory management.

Fixed-mount:

This is a bit more specialized scanner as compared to other types of scanners as a fixed mount is meant to integrate with a greater automated system. These are designed especially for conveyor lines and do not have any kind of trigger or any button to scan. Fixed scanners come in a great range of speeds to accommodate very high-speed assembly lines without user involvement.
